For Oscar, life is good. Living and working with his cousins in Dodge City, Kansas, he is living what one might call the American Dream. After many years Oscar finally receives his permanent resident card (green card), and opens a business, a house-painting company. The work is steady and honest. In fact, it is so constant that Oscar looks to buy a new vehicle to support the business. He is offered a truck at an incredible price, but he has to travel to San Antonio in order to pick it up. What should be a quick two-day trip, turns into one of panic when Oscar loses something he has worked so hard to achieve. Michelle is also living a good life. She and her husband, Marcos, live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Michelle and Marcos work hard - she as a delivery driver and he as a restaurant manager - in the hopes of bringing the rest of the family to live with them in New Mexico. Marcos is originally from Mexico and has two daughters who still live there with his mother. What the couple lacks, however, is the money needed to secure a lawyer to help with legal paperwork. On one particular trip to San Antonio, though, Michelle’s luck seems to turn when she finds a large sum of cash - a perfect solution to her problem. Or is it? Learn how the lives of two people on separate journeys intersect in San Antonio, one of the colonial cities of the southwest United States.

La Mochila is a story about morality and humanity, the backpack is only part of it! Main characters Oscar and Michelle are relatable/very human characters that I genuinely enjoyed reading about. I was satisfied with the ending and I felt like the realistic nature of the story made it so compelling!! Georgia V SF, Ca

This book was about a woman who found a very important backpack that belonged to a hard working man who was trying to buy a truck. I found it very interesting how both the lives of the woman a man interconnected because they had some similarities with each other and many differences as well. This was a very intriguing book because I was looking forward to what was going to happen next throughout the entire short story. This story teaches people about choosing between right and wrong and doing the right thing. ~Michael O. SF, CA

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a very interesting story, especially because there are two stories in one. Oscar is a hardworking man who loses his backpack of money while getting a car, Michelle finds the backpack, but she desperately needs the money. What will she do? Reading about Michelle and Oscar’s situation made me think. This story has some good lessons within the story, the dilemma of Michelle and the importance of honesty. - Gage M San Francisco, California

I really enjoyed your story of “La Mochila”. I enjoyed how it discussed topics of economics and politics, which involve deeper issues that the world faces today. The story revolves around Oscar and Michelle and shows the readers the importance honesty. “Honesty is the best policy”. Though it sometimes feels you will not benefit from the honesty, you will be helping someone else. The idea that good karma will come your way comes shines through in this story as the protagonists honesty offers a great reward for herself. Most times honesty comes as a different reward than the one in the story, the idea you are being true to the other person and doing what is right rather than what is selfish. Great story! Olivia L.

I enjoyed this book because when I saw the image of a backpack and money it got me intrigued. They were living well and were living what most people called the American Dream. Oscar wanted to buy a car for the business but it didn't go so well. I liked how I was able to read and follow along with the audio.

In this book there were two characters, Michelle and Oscar. Oscar has a painting business with his cousins and is going from Dodge City to San Antonio to get a new pick up truck for his business. Michelle is married, and wants her spouse’s kids from a previous marriage to live with her so they can all live as a family, except she needs money for an attorney. Michelle is also going to San Antonio because she works for FedEx. Oscar brings a red backpack with many important things: money, his registration , and his phone, and loses it along the way. Michelle finds the backpack and wants to give it back, but also wants his money for herself as she needs it for an attorney. The reader is left with the question: Will Michelle be honest and return the backpack so Oscar can get the pickup truck, or will she steal it? Overall, I liked this book because there were two different points of views. I liked knowing the thoughts of both characters instead of just one. I also liked the audio part of each chapter because it was easy to follow along and I didn’t get distracted. Lastly, I really like that they put the definition of some vocabulary words that I might not know, so I don’t have to go look them up separately and get distracted. Isabella G SF, CA

Fabiola B. San Fracisco, CA I really enjoyed this book. It not only explains the goal of the American Dream but also the outcomes of one's actions. A woman finds a backpack with money that she needs but also knows how the owner of the backpack, also needs it. It's a great quick-read but also a good way to practice Spanish.
